VETERANS CRISIS LINE

WHAT TO DO IN A CRISIS

Use Simple Steps:

  1. Stay with the person if it is safe.
  2. Remove access to firearms, medications, or other lethal means when possible.
  3. Call or text 988 and press 1.
  4. Contact a trusted family member, friend, VSO, chaplain, clinician, or peer support contact.
  5. Do not leave the situation to “see how it goes.”

Keep It Concise:

Talking about wanting to die, feeling trapped, being a burden, increased substance use, giving away belongings, rage, withdrawal, reckless behavior, severe sleep changes, or sudden calm after intense distress.

Family Script:

“I’m worried about you. Are you thinking about killing yourself?”

“I’m not here to judge you. I’m staying with you while we get help.”
