The Veterans Mental Health Council (VMHC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit advocacy organization devoted to empowering veterans and their families. Initially serving as their advocates, we aim to equip them with the tools and knowledge to advocate for themselves, fostering self-sufficiency and holistic well-being.
Based in Missouri, we focus on helping veterans navigate mental health services, housing, employment, VA benefits, and substance use resources. Our ultimate goal is to inspire them to advocate for others, creating a ripple effect of empowerment and meaningful change.
Year over year, the number of veterans not using VA services continues to decrease while the number of veterans dying by suicide continues to increase.
A recent study by the Wounded Warrior Project and Duke University found that veteran deaths by suicide and self harm are 2.4 times greater than the official estimate.
The reasons include negative prior experiences with the VA, a lack of trust in VA care, the belief that they do not qualify for VA care, excessive wait times, and difficulties navigating services

The Veterans Mental Health Council empowers veterans and their families to become confident self-advocates. Through advocacy, education, and peer support, we help veterans navigate systems, access critical resources, and build resilient, self-reliant communities where veterans support veterans.
