BUDDY CHECK 22

Missouri passes "Buddy Check 22 Day"

On August 28, 2020, legislation went into effect designating the 22nd day of each month in Missouri as “Buddy Check 22 Day,” promoting education and awareness around suicide prevention among military service members and veterans. The Veterans Mental Health Council supported the passage of this legislation through formal testimony and direct engagement with lawmakers, contributing subject-matter expertise and advocacy to advance statewide awareness and prevention efforts.

WHY “22”?

It stems from an older VA statistic that approximately 22 veterans died by suicide daily. We now know that more than 44 veterans die by suicide each day.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Remember the 22nd

What: Set a reminder on the 22nd of each month to check in with a service member, veteran, or their family.

Why: Connection supports mental health and helps reduce suicide risk. A simple check-in reminds veterans and their families they are valued and that help is available when needed.

Whether in person, by call, or by text, reaching out matters. It reminds people they are not alone and that someone cares.

Talk: Say, “I’ve been thinking of you. How are you doing?”

Listen: Hear them out and offer help if needed. If safety is a concern, call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (Veterans press 1).

Follow up: Let them know you’re there and plan to check in again.
